In this course, we will consider the intersections of justice studies, crime/delinquency, policy/law, and media. Employing case studies, we will critically analyze depictions of crime, criminals, and law enforcement in popular culture. Specific attention is placed to the following areas: the social construction of crime and justice; the structure and influence of media; and the implications of media portrayals of crime and justice; the structure and influence of media; and the implications of media portrayals of crime for policy, law, and our understandings of deviance. You are invited to explore a multitude of theories, ideas, and research as you learn about this dynamic field of study.

This course will build on Arctic Research Methods I, training students in methods needed to conduct Arctic convergence research projects. Techniques will including ground-based and remote sensing measurements of snow, ice, soil, vegetation, and built infrastructure. Students will also learn communication and education approaches necessary to facilitate collaboration between Arctic communities and researchers.

This course serves as an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS). NAIS cultivates a broad understanding of the history, lands, culture, literature, language and artistic expression, science and technology, race and identity, and social organization and political statuses of Indigenous peoples, emphasizing self-determination, sovereignty, and survivance globally. Students will learn about significant events and issues from Indigenous perspectives and develop new ways of thinking about Native peoples.
