Image and Sound is a foundation course in the aesthetics of motion picture and sound production. This course surveys key events, representative films, influential filmmakers, major film movements, and defining modes of film exhibition that mark the history of motion pictures from 1945 into the early 21^st century. The emphasis is on feature-length narrative, but films in other styles are occasionally presented. In addition to providing access to major works of film art, the course facilitates historical and geographical understanding of vital contexts – industrial, social, cultural, political, national, aesthetic, and technological – that have shaped the medium’s development since World War II. Students gain specialized understanding of cinema history as well as general knowledge of broad patterns in U.S. and world history.

Course Outcomes: After completing this course, students will be able to:

1) Identify key events, films, filmmakers, and film movements that define cinema history since 1945.

2) Appreciate the global diversity and range of styles encompassed within film history.

3) Understand how film history intersects with a wide range of other historical contexts.

4) Explain the major changes that have occurred in the U.S. film industry since 1945.

5) Perform basic professional programming practices common in cinema arts institutions.

Culture can be broadly defined as the symbolic process we use to learn about, categorize, and organize our world. It is through culture that we give meaning, value, order, and a measure of predictability to the flux of objects, experiences, and interactions that make up daily life. This seminar examines the role of information and communication technologies in cultural processes. To do this, we undertake a philosophical and historical examination of changing media practices and consider their impact on our values, behaviors, and social relations; the structure of thought and knowledge in the public sphere; the nature of privacy, work, and the economy; and the boundaries between humans and machines, among other topics.

Course Outcomes: After taking this course, students will:

1) Know about the intellectual history of communication, technology, and culture as concepts.

2) Understand the theoretical connections between communication technologies and culture.

3) Identify key eras and transformations in the historical development of communication technologies and culture.

We will approach this material by designing and drafting using computer software (AutoCAD). Another end outcome is that you will gain a certain level of competency with this AutoCAD software, a program used by the majority of the firms in these professions.
