ARTH 799 Ruins and Dilapidation in Art and Thought, from the Renaissance to more recent apocalyptic visions.

The Renaissance has traditionally been described in terms of rebirth and renewal, but it was also a period which grappled with the consequences of the ruin of a powerful civilization, the Roman Empire, and with the idea that even cultures are transitory. We will study examples of art, architecture, literature, and cinema from the fourteenth century to the beginning of the twenty-first in order to try to understand the factors that affected how destruction and decay were variously conceptualized and imagined.
