Clinical training in the full role of the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner emphasizes integration of two content areas: the knowledge and skills for PM-MHNP practice; and the specific mental health needs. Clinical experiences, lectures, case discussions, and projects allow students the opportunity to develop competencies in the ethical, safe, collaborative, and evidence-based provision of mental health. This online course builds on the NP's fundamental knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology, focusing on major mental disorders across the lifespan. Disorders are examined including various factors such as developmental, genetic, injury, trauma, infection, degeneration, and substance use disorders. Complex networks necessary for maintaining homeostasis within the brain and between the brain and body are examined in relation to these disorders. Prereq: majors only.

This online course provides the NP an overview of the principles and best practices for using psychopharmacology to treat mental disorders across the lifespan. Clinical uses, neuro-pharmacological mechanisms, risks, benefits, and outcomes of commonly used psychotropic drugs in the context of a comprehensive treatment plan are explored. Majors only.

This course focuses on models and methods of translating evidence into practice, including synthesis of evidence, program planning and evaluation, and preparation of an evidence-based research proposal. Students lay the foundation for their DNP Scholarly Project and may begin their 500 required clinical hours. Prereq: majors only. Cr/F.
