In ‘Social Justice & The Market’ we are going to explore the basic question of what should and should not be sold for money on the market through social justice perspectives. While most people believe that there are some things that should not be sold for money, there are multitude of controversies over what things should or should not be subject to ‘commodification’. Should we be able to pay surrogates to carry our babies? Should spouses be allowed to pay each other for child care? Should sex be for sale? Should you be able to sell your kidneys? Should moneylending be allowed? Should markets allocate refugees? Over the course of the semester we will explore various social justice perspectives and their support for our answers to these questions. Our responses to questions regarding the scope of markets are important, because they shape power and privilege in society; can exacerbate or ameliorate inequalities; and impact the lives that people with diverse identity factors can live.
