Studio methods, professional activities, and ideas of historical and contemporary artists are also studied. The semester includes readings, discussions, and field trips. The course encourages students to develop ideas about the relationship of the visual arts to other disciplines in fine arts, literature and the sciences.

ARTS 625: Woodworking and Furniture Design Workshop - Spring Semester 2025

Title: Design, Build, Respond

Building furniture is an activity that involves invention, experimentation, and construction; activities that need to be practiced, multiple times, to get them right. In this course, students will have the opportunity to use woodworking joinery and construction methods to create both wall-hung and tabletop pieces. These projects will give students a chance to explore 3-dimensional work within the shallow space of the wall as well as in the round and sitting or standing on a tabletop surface. Project designs will build on each other, giving students the chance to test out ideas through various shapes, techniques, and functional offerings.

This course will include 2 field trips to visit furniture makers and sculptors in NH along with reading assignments and class discussions about communicating information through wood, woodworking techniques, and furniture design.

Intermediate Relief Printmaking

Printmaking Workshop: Arts 636-01 Kate Knox

This workshop will build on the foundational techniques taught in Intro to Relief Printmaking as we explore intermediate to advanced relief printmaking techniques – including multi-block color woodcuts, 6-color reduction linocuts, strategies for adding color to relief prints with monotype and large format prints. Students will become adept at color separation, layering transparent color, registration techniques and planning a project in steps. As they broaden their knowledge of press maintenance, ink modification and carving tool care, students will acquire an expanded printmaking skillset as well as an understanding of how to maintain a print studio using ecologically safe and monetarily efficient studio practices.
