Senior Design Project I

Credits: 2.0
Term: Fall 2024 - Full Term (08/26/2024 - 12/09/2024)
Grade Mode: Letter Grading
Class Size:   115
CRN: 10337
Part I of this two-part sequence emphasizes problem definition, analysis, development of alternative concepts, decision-making processes, synthesis of an optimum solution and the development of a conceptual design. Lectures on these and other topics are combined with seminars given by professionals from industry, government, and academia. Related topics include ISO9000 quality systems, engineering management, design review process, engineering economics, team building and communications. Students are organized into project teams to develop a conceptual design. Formal design reviews are conducted. A formal proposal documents the semester's work.

Additional Course Details:

Statistical mechanics underlies nearly every aspect of mechanical engineering: it explains thermodynamics, underlies fluid mechanics, provides constitutive laws for continuum mechanics, and gives the foundations to transport phenomena near and far from equilibrium. This course develops the basic ideas of statistical mechanics by way of its manifold applications across science and engineering. We will focus particular attention on emergent properties. Topics include temperature, equilibrium, ergodicity, entropy, phase transitions, and symmetries. We will develop these ideas in the contexts of transport, material properties, fluid mechanics, and emerging areas of engineering including active matter.
