This course focuses on the development of bioinks for the automated production of tissue constructs. Advanced techniques such as recombinant synthesis, organic synthesis, protein characterization, polysaccharide characterization, organic chemical characterization, rheology, electron microscopy, 3D bioprinting, biomanufacturing, biocompatibility testing, and quality control will be covered both in lecture and lab. Special focus will be directed towards formulating bioinks using proteins, polysaccharides, and synthesis polymers, with the ultimate goal being the production of stem cell or cancer organoids.
This course meets the advanced majors course requirement for Biotechnology majors as a Lab Techniques category class.
Friday lab times (any 2-to 3-hour time block between 9 am to 5 pm) will mainly be utilized for cell maintenance purposes. If the weekly third lab period (i.e., Friday) is not possible, a student can coordinate with the instructor and come up with an alternative schedule. For more information, please contact the instructor.
