Additional Course Details: 

This course uses economic tools to understand the role and possible effects of government policy in a market economy. The goal is to provide an understanding of the reasons for government intervention in the economy, as well as the challenges in implementing and evaluating those interventions. The course makes use of economic tools and empirical analyses to investigate specific U.S. expenditure and tax policies such as income transfer programs (e.g., TANF, SNAP), social insurance programs (e.g., Social Security and Medicare), personal income taxes and wealth taxes. Additional topics include the effects of deficit finance and government debt, the interaction between different levels (local vs federal) government and problems in collective decisionmaking (voting models and public choice).

This course will provide students with a survey of economic models in international trade, applied to innovation-related issues. The course is divided into three sections. In the first one, we look at the role that industry, universities, and the government play in the national innovation system. In the second part, we look at innovation from an international perspective. In particular, we delve into the relationship between globalization and innovation. Finally, we analyze the role of externalities in the knowledge economy and particularly network effects in the diffusion of new technologies.

Macroeconomic Consulting

Assess a macroeconomy's condition over the short-run and long-run. Emphasis is given to the construction of data from the National Income and Product Accounts (NIPA), Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the Federal Reserve System (FRS), and other sources. This course also considers the role and functioning of financial markets and how business decisions are impacted by short-run and long-run macroeconomic developments.
