This course is dedicated to examining various digital creative writing projects in order to teach ourselves, as creators, how to develop and construct our own works. We'll be looking at all kinds of innovative approaches at storytelling that utilize digital means. We will be doing three main things: consuming, analyzing, and creating new stories. This means 1) critically consuming and analyzing various digital projects, utilizing what we see in order to 2) create digital projects of our own.

The assigned texts and the artifacts we will examine are meant to be jumping off points from which we can explore our own creative practices and expansive modes of storytelling. As a result of the course, students will be able to critically look at media representations and meanings in multiple cultural and identity contexts, observe technical aspects of both the visual and textual, and apply their learning by producing a final creative project.

A survey of the languages of the world from genetic, areal, and typological perspectives. Students learn about the geographic and demographic distribution of language families and language isolates, as well as about structural characteristics of languages, language families and language areas. Additional topics include language endangerment and the question of linguistic universals. Students work collaboratively on a project investigating a particular language family, giving in class presentations and writing up a final project report. Some prior knowledge of phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax is necessary. Prereq: ENGL 605/LING 605 or ENGL 405/LING 405 and permission of the instructor.

This course explores traditional film genres and the contemporary practice of mixed genre films that address the increasing demand for cultural entertainment reflecting the diversity and mobility of our national and global cultures. After an initial study of key film genres such as the Western, gangster film, film noir, melodrama, musical, war film, and comedy, we will examine recent mixed genre films such as Joker (Todd Philipps); Parasite (Joon-ho Bong), and Black Panther (Coogler), etc. Our goal is to understand how an intersectional mix of genres helps to articulate contemporary culture in its complexity and its sophisticated forms of cultural representation and entertainment.

Impact, conflict, novelty, timeliness – these are what make for compelling news. In this class you’ll learn how journalists determine what is and isn’t news, and how great news stories get written. You’ll develop your reporting and writing skills, learning how to interview and how to create clear, concise, interesting stories. In class, we’ll discuss readings, talk about different types of stories and about writing and reporting techniques, do writing and reporting exercises, and workshop your stories.

Spring 2023 Course Details: Creative Nonfiction

Creative nonfiction employs the imagery of a poet, the drama of a novelist, and the content drive of a journalist. In this class, we will do all of that in 500-1,000, words. Flash nonfiction is an ever-popular form of true story telling, requiring a tight focus, a reliance on symbol and detail, and the discipline to complete a story with meaning and precision in few words. Writers of flash have a lot of fun with form – think poetry, think one very long sentence, think lists – and revision. It is difficult, probably impossible, to carve a complete tale in 750-words on a first, or even second try. Flash teaches us to squash the excess and celebrate the key word, the key image, the key moment. Students will read a wide variety of flash nonfiction, produce weekly essay drafts, and critique each other’s work with generosity and specifics.

Students continue to explore the aspects of fiction writing. Through short exercises students learn to create visual scenes, integrate exposition with dramatic scene, and construct convincing characters in believable situations. We'll continue to explore the basic elements of what makes a short story, such as point of view, dialogue, dramatization, voice, meaning, language. Students write short stories and significantly revise them. Through discussion of student writing in a workshop format, as well as reading and responding to short stories by published authors, we'll address the questions: What is a short story? How do we create a world in which the reader is fully involved? Where does the story evoke emotion or meaning? Prereq: ENGL 501, 526, 527 or permission of the instructor.
