The Silk Road, often characterized as the world's first great superhighway, played a vital role in spreading forms of art and in developing new technologies for their production. The peoples along the Silk Road traded luxury goods such as silk and jade as well as culinary and musical traditions. Through lectures, readings, films, and podcasts we will explore the trade links between East and West and the material objects traded along the way.

Crime, Law, and Justice in American History

This class charts major developments in American law and the criminal justice system from 1700 to present. Each week we will focus on a case study that illuminates the most pressing issues in law and crime for a particular era. Over the course of the semester, we will probe how ideas about criminology, psychology and forensic science developed, the ways the role of prosecutors, defense attorneys and judges have changed, and the ways crime is defined and understood by the public. We will also pay attention to why crime has been so fascinating to generations of Americans, and how crime and the criminal justice system is portrayed in journalism, fiction, film, and popular culture.

Europe in Flames! Reaction & Revolt in Nineteenth-Century Europe

This course examines the various European responses to the tremendous social, economic, and cultural upheavals unleashed by the French and Industrial Revolutions in the nineteenth century. Particular attention will be paid to to industrialization, nationalism, socialism, liberalism, conservatism, feminism, and imperialism and to the ways in which these ideas and movements both emerged out of the particular context of the nineteenth century and remain relevant to the present day.

Sports, Race, and Gender
From Celtics vs. Lakers, Red Sox vs. Yankees, UNC vs. Duke, to Iowa vs. LSU, sports rivalries activate us. Who do you root for? Sports bring us ecstasy and suffering. They provide a calendar to organize our lives; Spring Training, March Madness, Super Bowl Sunday. Because of their tremendous hold on our individual and collective psyches, sports offer a unique path into studying many of the central conflicts of American society. In this class, we will focus on the interplay between race, gender, and sports. What role have sports played in African Americans’ ongoing fights for Civil Rights? How has Title IX impacted female athletes’ quest for equality? Does success on the field translate to meaningful advances for Black athletes? In a society which likes to claim that women have similar professional opportunities to men, how do you explain the fact that the NBA rookie minimum salary is $898,310 while the WNBA rookie minimum is $58,000?

Western societies from the Roman Empire to the emerging nation states of early modern Europe spent an enormous proportion of their surplus wealth on war. This course introduces this crucial aspect of Western history and examines the period extending from the third century AD, to just before the extensive introduction into Europe of gunpowder weapons in the fifteenth century. Discussion of not only battlefield tactics and famous generals but also the effect that war had upon society as a whole and the economic ramifications of war, the Christianization of war, and the effect of war upon literature. Course meets the History major requirements for Group II.
