Additional Course Details:

MUSI 871 is a study of contrapuntal techniques found in tonal music of the Baroque, as exemplified principally by the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Students will complete exercises and learn compositional techniques of two- and three-voice polyphony through analysis and exercises and will complete one or more two-voice compositions in the following genres: (1) ground bass piece; (2) chorale prelude; (3) two-part reprise forms; or (4) invention. As time permits, we will explore (1) compositions for four or more voices such as the fugue, concerto, and concerted sacred music; and (2) elemental voice-leading patterns that underlie more elaborate compositional designs and harmonic prolongation in tonal music of the eighteenth century.
