The final product is a prospectus for the capstone project, to be presented in writing and orally to MPP faculty and students.

A consideration of research techniques and problems of methodology in psychology. The first semester stresses the principles of statistical inference, correlational approaches, and their interrelatedness in design. Topics considered include probability theory, linear regression, function-free prediction, the theory underlying statistical inference, parametric and nonparametric tests of significance, and principles of analysis of variance. The second semester extends correlational approach to the techniques and methodology of multiple regression and considers the appropriate use and theoretical bases of complex designs.

“We are given tiny distorted upside-down images in the eyes, and we see separate solid objects in surrounding space. From the patterns of stimulation on the retina we perceive the world of objects and this is nothing short of a miracle.” -Richard Gregory

Through lecture, student presentations, and readings, we will explore how animals, both human and non-human, sense the environment visually. Our study will integrate ideas from psychology, neuroscience, and physics as we develop an understanding of how physical events impact our visual systems that, in turn, generate what we see. During nearly every class we will make liberal use of classroom demonstrations to illustrate the topics of study.
