Additional Course Details:

How do the environment and natural resources affect conflicts between and within states? What are the effects of war and conflict on the natural environment and human security? This seminar examines various cases of conflict and natural resources from the Middle East, Africa, and East Asia. We also look at how natural resource extraction, production, and consumption shape political governance and economic wellbeing before, during, and after conflict. Other topics covered include refugees, climate change, and infectious disease.

Technology & War

How does weapons technology affect how states fight and the ways in which international politics work? This course considers the relationship between technology and war by considering three key questions: in what context did different weapons develop? have any weapons had a revolutionary effect on war? how have different war strategies changed the conduct of international politics? We will consider the development and effects of weapons including gunpowder, tanks, submarines, nuclear weapons, and drones.

This course fulfills the POLT capstone seminar requirement, and also counts for the International Security Minor, and the POLT Option in Major in International Security.
