This course explores modern microprocessor technology, focusing on microcontroller units (MCUs) for embedded systems. The topics include MCU structure, volatile and non-volatile memories, versatile input/output blocks, analog components, instruction set architecture, and assembly language programming. Laboratory work provides various C programming exercises with the Texas Instruments MSP430, a 16-bit MCU.

Students define the problem, create a schedule and budget, and work on a team to research, design, build, and test the software and hardware needed. Senior standing in the ET program required. This is a two-semester, year-long course: 4 credits per semester, a letter grade is given at the end of each semester. Withdrawal from course results in loss of credit.
