Additional Course Details:

This semester, the course will focus on several connections between music and concepts of power in Western culture including: representations of the Orpheus legend from Greek mythology; Romantic assertions about the power of music; music as a tool of oppression and resistance during the Third Reich; and critical theories about the positive and negative power of popular music in modern Western society. The goal for the course is to provide you with a variety of perspectives from which to contemplate how music functions in our culture, and to critically assess some of our accepted truisms and platitudes about the power of music.
