African American Political Thought

Participants in this course will engage with important concepts in the history of African American political thought, from the early 19th century to the present. These ideas include slavery and freedom, equality and inequality, racism and segregation, and the meaning of democratic citizenship in a multiracial society.  The syllabus may include thinkers such as Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Jacobs, Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Martin Luther King Jr., Stokely Carmichael, Angela Davis, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Thomas Sowell, and John McWhorter.
