ARTS 651- Fall 2023- Julee Holcombe
This course serves as an introduction to early 19th-century photographic processes through digital and film capture to produce; photogravures, cyanotypes, van-dykes, salt printing, antho-types, Chlorophyll, and platinum (Pt/Pd). Students experiment with film formats and discover the possibilities of working with various light-capturing devices for contact printing. This course encourages students to explore darkroom processes to combine photographic imagery with unconventional materials, such as fine art papers, textiles, wood, clay, metal, glass, plastic, and stone. Alternative photography is a playful medium that brings the artist's hand back into the picture-making process. Instagram and many other apps and software programs are designed to simulate alternative forms of photography; here, you will learn the history and evolution of this trend. From 11×14 pinhole cameras to 4×5 and 8×10 view cameras, students learn the advantages, excitement, and craft of creating photographs with new tools. Students develop paper negatives, film, and digital negatives in large formats with large cameras.
