This course critically examines the role of forensic anthropologists and bioarchaeologists in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). We will review the history of these fields and how typological research has helped to promulgate discrimination, as well as highlight key contributions by minority researchers. We will also read recent peer-reviewed publications introducing ongoing DEI debates and engage in active discussions on the theoretical and practical implications of these perspectives. Additionally, we will consider how objective science really is, the value of diversity on innovation and productivity, and what responsibility practitioners and students have in promoting antiracism, diversity, and decolonizing research strategies.
