Although the idea of a masterpiece is medieval, the concept is often most readily associated with work made during the brief period in Italian art history during which Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo were all active.  What is it about the art of this period that made it so pivotal, so rich a resource for centuries afterwards?  And what about the later sixteenth century?  What did the generations that followed immediately after the High Renaissance think art should be?

ARTH 695 - Topics in Art History: ROMANTICISM

This course explores the artistic movement known as Romanticism, from its emergence in post-Revolutionary France amid disillusionment with Enlightenment reason and order, through its stylistically diverse development by Francisco de Goya, William Blake, Henry Fuseli, J.M.W. Turner, Caspar David Friedrich, and others. Topics will include these artists’ cultivation of originality and imagination, emphasis on nature’s sublime and unknowable power, exploration of emotional and psychological extremes, and fascination with the exotic. Art history is by its nature interdisciplinary, and so this course, while it is intended as the capstone for art history majors, also welcomes voices (and eyes) from other disciplines. We will look at a variety of case studies addressing works of art and architecture, and students will research their own topics, in an effort to understand better the strengths and weaknesses of art historical thought, both past and present. Prereq: at least one 600-level or above art history course or equivalent experience.
