Students will build on their basic claim drafting skills by learning the rules, regulations, customs, and practices for interacting with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) when filing and prosecuting patent applications. Students will draft one complete patent specification and claims, as well as draft responses to two USPTO Office Actions. Students will gain ease and facility in researching USPTO rules, policies and procedures via an understanding of the Manuel of Patent Examination Procedures (MPEP). Students will possess and understanding of USPTO forms, and will prepare forms and additional documents for filing with the USPTO. The course format is recorded presentations, presentation slides, readings, discussions, small quizzes and task projects, three graded written assignments and a final exam. Theory and general principles are covered, as well as practical matters encountered in practice, with written feedback on the assignments. The course is primarily delivered via self-paced learning modules online; note however that module access is controlled to prevent working ahead and module content is tested at the end of each module to ensure material comprehension. Zoom office hours as needed. With sufficient student interest, weekly or bi-weekly Zoom drop-in sessions are held to facilitate student questions and engage in discussions with the professor and classmates.
