In this course, students learn to flesh out an idea for a book of creative nonfiction, which could either be literary journalism - a tale based on reportage - or memoir. Students focus on pulling multiple themes together in a strong narrative. By semester's end, students have written a book proposal and a first chapter. Students are asked to arrive at the first class with a topic researched enough to begin the book process. Permission of instructor required.

Fall 2022 Course Details

How do you turn an idea, or an essay, or a collection of essays into a book?  In this workshop we will demystify the art of writing a book-length manuscript and begin a narrative nonfiction project’s journey from short-form to long-form. How do you develop multiple themes? Multiple characters? How do you structure a complicated narrative? How do you organize a collection of essays? We will study the art of crafting a book proposal, the essential first step towards publishing a lengthy nonfiction narrative. Because often books evolve from an essay or an article, we will explore pitching to and publishing in magazines and journals as well as Random House. A series of guest speakers, ranging from authors to agents to editors, will provide advice and insights. Readings include successful book proposals as well as narrative nonfiction books that can serve as models. Students must arrive at the first class with a topic developed enough to begin this adventure. This course is especially helpful to students immersed in writing, or are preparing to write, their thesis manuscripts. All forms of creative nonfiction are embraced.

Morphology is the study of word formation and the mental lexicon. This course explores processes of derivation, compounding and inflection that allow us to form new words. Students will become proficient in analyzing word formation processes in English and other languages, including deploying terminology used by morphologists. Have you ever wondered if ‘to podium’ is really a word? Whether it’s OK to say ‘bananadom’ or ‘blockbusterology’? These are things that linguistic morphologists might think about. This class will be a comprehensive introduction to the field of linguistic morphology. Topics covered will include the relationship between dictionaries and the mental lexicon, ways of forming new words (affixation, compounding, conversion, blending, reduplication, etc.), the difference between inflection and derivation, methods of analyzing word formation (including corpus based studies), the relationship of morphology to syntax and phonology, and the kinds of morphology that are found in the languages of the world. We will explore word formation both in English and in other languages, and our approach will be both practical and theoretical. Course requirements will include weekly problem sets, take home midterm and final exams, and two short research projects. Barring duplication of subject, may be repeated for credit.

Fall 2022 Course Details: Environmental Theory

How can we talk about environmental crisis? What words can we use to represent the natural world—and human interactions with it? Is it possible to describe nature without cultural projections? How can language change vision, policy, action? In this course, we will grapple with the urgent need to articulate environmental issues by reading contemporary critics who are inventing vocabularies to do so, such as Rob Nixon on “slow violence” and Stacy Alaimo on “trans-corporeality.” We’ll read 19th-21st century writers who write about different environments from different perspectives, shaped in part by race, gender, indigeneity, and class: Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, Mary Austin, Rachel Carson, Barry Lopez, Evelyn White, Joy Harjo, and Octavia Butler. We’ll read ecocriticism by Carolyn Merchant, Elizabeth DeLoughrey, Bruno Latour, and Kimberly Ruffin. We’ll explore ecofeminism, environmental justice, postcolonial ecology, and the concept of the Anthropocene. Students taking 736 for Women’s Studies credit will write papers that focus on women writers or on gender and the environment. Writing intensive. Satisfies a post-1800 literature requirement for English majors. In fall 2022, this class fulfills a DH requirement for the TBD major. Students taking 897M will write a graduate-level research paper; students taking 897M for credit towards a Graduate Certificate in Feminist Studies will also write such a paper and will focus their written work on women writers, ecofeminist theory, or gender and the environment.
