This course emphasizes the "dream theories" of indigenous societies and how beliefs and practices associated with dreaming are integrated into cultural, ontological, political, economic, and religious systems. Why do we dream? What do people around the world believe about dreaming? What does it all mean?

This WRITING INTENSIVE course begins with Freud’s theory of dreaming, delves into the new neuroscience of dreaming, and explores the dream-related beliefs of Indigenous peoples around the world. Taught in seminar-style, the course also involves SELF-EXPLORATION: we learn how to remember, record, and analyze our own dreams using a variety of techniques.
