The Americas have hosted several wars against drugs, but these militarized campaigns have not curtailed the global consumption of opiates, cocaine, and cannabis. Perhaps even more sobering, the drug wars have coincided with spiraling rates of violent crime. Given this track record, policymakers have begun to reevaluate drug policies in the US and abroad. This course evaluates these contemporary changes, particularly in light of the successes and failures of past drug control policies.

The Enlightenment

This intermediate-level political thought course will examine the revolution in thought that occurred  throughout Europe and the early United States in the 18th Century.  Often called the Age of Reason. In that period, thinkers of all types questioned established ‘truths’ and the influence of theology on intellectual inquiry, subjecting ideas and policies to  the scrutiny of empiricism and logic.  This movement planted the seeds for modern liberalism, cultural humanism, science and technology and laissez fairE capitalism.  We will study works on politics, war, art, economics and crime by such thinkers as Diderot, Voltaire, Adam Smith, Locke and James Madison, among many others.
