Art history is by its nature interdisciplinary, and so this course, while it is intended as the capstone for art history majors, also welcomes voices (and eyes) from other disciplines. We will look at a variety of case studies addressing works of art and architecture, and students will research their own topics, in an effort to understand better the strengths and weaknesses of art historical thought, both past and present. Columns, Arches, and Vaults are the principal components of Roman architecture. Architects deployed them in combination with new construction materials such as concrete with the aim to mold space and produce in the complex building designs of the High Empire. In this course we will explore how to design and deploy these components by learning how to model them in 3 dimensions in dedicated workshops using SketchUp, a 3d modeling software. In addition to learning about ancient buildings and architectural principles our task will be to recreate and/or design a Roman building as your main research assignment.
