The course operates from a risk and resilience perspective and theory of social vulnerability to demonstrate the power of strengths-based approaches to prevention and intervention strategies. Further, an ecological and developmental systems perspective is used to understand how individual assets, family units, peer relations, school systems, extracurricular opportunities, communities, and the sociocultural and sociopolitical environments influence the biopsychosocial development of youth. Social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion are interwoven throughout the course by discussing issues related to age and development, race and culture, gender/sex and sexual orientation, income and access, and dis/ability within sport. In the end, students will develop knowledge of generalist practice to enhance their skills related to designing, implementing, facilitating, and evaluating sport-based programming and practices in a variety of sport settings and systems.
