Spring 2021 Special Topic

Two hundred years of Gothic fiction (with a dash of drama, poetry and cinema). The Gothic literature craze crested early in the 19C, but the works best known to us came after that time, as thoughtful variations on the genre. This course will look at a two or three flagship works of 19C gothic, before going on to consider how the form evolved and ramified in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Our starting point will be Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818), and our likely terminus Jeanette Winterson’s Frankissstein (2019). In between, we will read an assortment of long and short works by British and American authors, among whom may be Charlotte or Emily Bronte, William Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor, Steven King, and a host of less familiar names worth getting to know.

This course will satisfy a Post-1800 Literature requirement for English Department majors.

Encounter the Romantic fantasies of John Keats's nature poetry and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the Victorian novels that brought us Jane Eyre, Ebenezer Scrooge and Mr. Hyde, the experiments of Modernists like Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, and Postmodern transformations by a shifting cast of contemporaries. We'll read these works in the context of imperial expansion and contraction, the crises of world wars, and the civil rights and independence struggles of the 20th and 21st centuries.

From Romantics to Recycling: A Survey of British Literature

This course, OFFERED REMOTELY, is an exploration of British literature written over more than 200 years. We will read and discuss poems, plays, essays, and fiction from the periods literary critics have called “Romantic,” “Victorian,” “Modern” and “Postmodern.” We will explore shifts in literary style as well as the historical contexts for these aesthetic movements, including imperial expansion and contraction, the struggle to abolish slavery, the crises of world wars, migration, women’s suffrage, and multiple independence movements of the 20^th and 21^st centuries.
