This two-semester requirement provides supervised learning and practice within social work programs in a wide range of program settings. Students spend 16 hours per week in the field. Individual field placements arranged with each student by the field coordinator. In order to receive credit, students must satisfactorily complete both SW 880 and SW 881. A concurrent integrative seminar is required. In this weekly seminar attention is given to the development of basic social work skills and techniques, legal and ethical issues, and the development of appropriate professional relationships. A primary goal is to integrate classroom learning with the field experience. Special fee. Cr/F.
Section Comments: Students in this course will have bi-weekly mandatory synchronous component that will happen on a Monday or Wednesday evening between 7-9 EST for a 1 hour block. The aim of this course is to introduce students to military and veteran culture, particularly as it pertains to meeting the clinical needs of this population.  Students will identify both strengths and challenges faced by active duty and reserve military service personnel, military family members, and veterans.  Main topics of the course will include military lifestyle, values, and rank structure; the deployment cycle; reintegration after service; and physical and mental health impacts of service. The course will also explore systems of care available for service members and veterans and the role of social workers within these systems.

Forensic Mental Health blends the intricacies of law and mental health disorders with the understanding that each individual case is very unique and needs to be evaluated very carefully. This is a very informative, fast-paced and detailed course that is meant to give students samples of the Forensic and Mental Health worlds; how they complement each other and collide against each other. Throughout this course, students will learn the basics of identifying and reporting on childhood abuse, neglect and trauma related to safety and harm. Students will learn the differences between clinically and forensically interviewing victims, alleged perpetrators and collateral's for the sole purpose of information seeking. Students will conduct research on a serial killer of their choosing while making connections to any possible childhood trauma. Students will learn what is expected and acceptable in a court room regarding etiquette and proceedings when involved in a case as a professional and/or other participant.
