Starting with a survey of the night sky and the daily motions of the stars and planets, this course surveys our current understanding of the Universe. It traces the development of the tools of the modern astronomer and how those tools have led to out theories of the solar system, the life cycle of stars, the formation of elements, the formation of galaxies and the evolution of the universe. Students explore in depth an astronomical topic of their choice through a term paper. The course includes direct experience with astronomical techniques and concepts through the use of the UNH Observatory and Small Radio Telescope, and a visit to a planetarium. Recommended for liberal arts and beginning science students. Knowledge of high school algebra is assumed. Note that this is the same course as PHYS 406, except for the substitution of a term paper instead of a lab. Cannot be taken for credit if credit received for PHYS 406. Special fee.

Public Engagement in Communities - Using an Equity Lens as a Reflective Practitioner – This online course introduces frameworks and established practices effective for increasing social equity and fostering inclusive participation in decisions and actions that impact people’s lives. Team taught by practitioners and scholars in equity and public engagement, we ground this course in our professional and personally lived experiences from our work in schools, towns, state and regional initiatives. We hope you will bring your stories too! As a member of the class, you will engage in discussions about your identities, biases, and power within your work, learning, and home communities. You will also learn about and reflect upon facilitation strategies for guiding challenging conversations, addressing conflict, and building community coalitions across difference. 

This course has asynchonous and synchronous parts. We will gather together online for large and small group discussions on the following days:

  • 5:30 to 7:30pm, Thursday, January 7th, 2021 
  • 5:30 to 7:30pm, Thursday, January 14th, 2021
