ART WRITERS: THEIR SOURCES AND THEIR EFFECTS
This course for beginners to the subject will introduce the history of art through the history of influential writings about the history of
art, as well as texts which have served to inspire artists’ imaginations. The interface between text and image will be addressed in
relation to ancient art, medieval art, Renaissance art, and in the use of intertitles in silent film. Art theory, art criticism, and art
historical writing (both scholarly and not) will be sampled, always in relation to how we look at works of art, and how those
patterns of looking change across the centuries. When is visual communication sufficient in itself, and when is it not?
