Social workers in every field of practice will come into contact with and have to support individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and co-occurring mental health disorders. People with (IDD) experience a full range of mental health issues, as does the general population. Students in this course will 1) develop an understanding of co-occurring conditions and IDD populations, 2) understand difficulties in the diagnosis of mental health conditions in people with IDD, 3) become familiar with mental health conditions for people with intellectual disability by learning about psychiatric disorders and treatment, 4) understand specific clinical presentations as well as treatment and support adaptations for mental health problems in individuals with IDD, and 5) understand the role of social work in supporting individuals with IDD and mental health issues in various practice contexts.
