With a focus on international organizations, we examine what roles international institutions (both IGOs and NGOs) play in global governance and their effects in various issue areas. We examine their historical origins, functions, and the international and domestic political forces that impact their effectiveness. The course also considers the role of international organizations on world order including conflict resolution, peacekeeping, development, and human rights.

Additional Course Details:

What is corruption, and what can be done to prevent it? That is the focus of this seminar on “Corruption and Ethics” in American government.

The objective of this course is to provide students with the tools they require to understand different types of corruption as well as the anticorruption strategies used to combat them. Relying on a wide range of historical and current (“drawn from the headlines”) case studies, we will consider and critically assess different theories and perspectives applied in the study of corruption. Students will be required to complete two research assignments, one focused on a specific case of corruption and the other a paper that explores how corruption is addressed in a particular political “domain” or policy arena.
