In ‘Social Justice & The Market’ we are going to explore the basic question of what should and should not be sold for money on the market through social justice perspectives. While most people believe that there are some things that should not be sold for money, there are multitude of controversies over what things should or should not be subject to ‘commodification’. Should we be able to pay surrogates to carry our babies? Should spouses be allowed to pay each other for child care? Should sex be for sale? Should you be able to sell your kidneys? Should moneylending be allowed? Should markets allocate refugees? Over the course of the semester we will explore various social justice perspectives and their support for our answers to these questions. Our responses to questions regarding the scope of markets are important, because they shape power and privilege in society; can exacerbate or ameliorate inequalities; and impact the lives that people with diverse identity factors can live.

Race, Sexuality and Representation

This course will look at the intersection of race, gender and sexuality in a variety of different texts. The course will be multi-genre and will include an exploration of: memoir, poetry, documentary and narrative film and popular music. It will focus on the experiences of Queer and Trans People of Color [QTPOC] and Black Feminists [BF] in carving out a discursive space for historically silenced communities to come to voice. We will focus on politics, activism and aesthetics, and examine the ways in which marginalized populations utilize diverse media to tell their own stories and break culturally imposed silences. How have QTPOC and BF resisted multiple forms of oppression and created revolutionary modes of representation to promote freedom, justice and liberation for the oppressed? Authors, musicians and directors explored will include: Alok Vaid-Menon, Audre Lorde, Big Freedia, Marlon Riggs, Beyonce, Sylvester, Essex Hemphill, Janet Mock, Barry Jenkins, Cheryl Dunye, Dee Rees and others. Work for the course to include readings, in-class discussion, presentations, response papers, the production of a class-wide zine and a final research essay on a topic of the student’s choosing.
