Additional Course Details: 

The term gender is often associated with studies of women’ lives in Muslim communities. Studies of masculinities and other gender identities among Muslims are still rare. Through a variety of ethnographic, historical, and gender studies readings and visual media, this seminar introduces students to everyday gendered lives of Muslims, with a focus on models of and models for gendered behavior and feelings. 

After a brief introduction to anthropology, Islam, and gender studies, we will exlore a history of representation of gender roles in Muslim communities and gender ideologies. We will investigate various contextual gendered practices and discourses, relationships between gender and sexuality, and gender-spectrum, including trans-gender. At the end of the course we will look at gender and violence and gendered agency in Muslim communities. It is a Writing Intensive Seminar! During the course we will have FOUR Writing Workshops. You will learn how to write a research paper about the instersection between Gender and Islam!
