Course Contents

This course will expose students to the strategic role human resources play in maximizing the value of the workforce. Organizations in today's economy rely not only on the knowledge and skills of their employees, but also on their engagement with the work and each other and their commitment to the organization's mission. As such, the management of human talent is a responsibility of every manager, in partnership with the HR function, and is vital to the success of any organization. The coverage of course concepts will be approached from both from a general manager's perspective as well as from an HR perspective, considering human resource systems and practices available to build a skilled and motivated workforce.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the strategic role of human resources management in supporting the business objectives of an organization.
  2. Identify human resource systems and practices available to build a skilled and motivated workforce.
  3. Explain the laws and regulations affecting human resources management as well as to apply ethical decision making to situations involving human resources.

Additional Course Details: 

This course focuses on the development and use of optimization and Monte-Carlo simulation models for making quantitative business decisions. With respect to optimization, the course will cover linear and mixed-integer programming, network flow optimization, and nonlinear optimization. Additional topics such as goal programming and decision trees may also be discussed.

Application areas include Marketing (e.g., advertising, pricing and revenue optimization), Finance (e.g., capital budgeting and portfolio optimization), and Operations management (e.g., production and inventory planning, project or personnel scheduling, shipping and distribution, routing, ride matching, location selection, etc.)

The course delivery will be a mix of lectures, hands-on problem solving, and case discussions. Most of the model development and analysis will be done using advanced tools and add-ins within a spreadsheet environment, but additional software may be introduced as needed.

Additional Course Details: 

Negotiating and decision-making are essential managerial skills, necessary for influencing employees and stakeholders. This interactive, experiential course will teach you a proven framework for maximizing your value in a negotiation. You will work with classmates to identify solutions to common, but, complex, negotiation dilemmas. 

This course is designated as "hybrid" and meets face-to-face for only three full days: 8am-5pm, April 5-7. A requirement for this course is that you attend class each day for the full day the course meets face-to-face.
