Additional Course Details:

ADMN 898 Managing Growth and Innovation deals with central concepts and related applications at the intersection of technological innovation, organizational growth, and corporate entrepreneurship or intrapreneurship.

The overall course structure is based on the principles of ‘integrated course design’ (Fink, 2003), with close linkages among three core course attributes: learning goals, teaching and learning activities, and feedback and assessment. In effect, this means the course lays out explicit learning goals students will achieve as the course unfolds. Additionally, the teaching and learning activities throughout the course are set up to help students to progress towards attaining the learning goals. Finally, student performance assessment and feedback will be geared toward providing timely feedback as to how “close” the student is toward achieving the learning goal(s) and how “well” he/she has been able to achieve it on date. This will help students to take charge of their learning and utilizing the feedback they will be able to improve and enhance their learning further during the time left on the course.

In order to achieve the imperatives of sustained growth, technological innovation is increasingly becoming the lever that firms adopt, especially in disruptive business environments. Yet, building an organization to successfully and repeatedly bring innovations to market is a daunting managerial challenge. As organizations get more established, they often lose the innovative edge, finding that their very existence is threatened by their inability to innovate successfully. Leaders with a deep understanding of innovation and change management, which are central to intrapreneurship, can help organizations counteract this tendency.

Focusing on firm growth in the first part of the course, we will examine why it is so challenging to maintain sustained growth in disruptive environments. Simultaneously, we will examine the nature of disruptive environments, including how industry standards evolve. The second part of the course will take a close look at technological innovation as the lever that can help firms to achieve and maintain sustained growth. Specifically, we will examine four aspects of technological innovation and their impact on organizational growth: exploring, executing, leveraging, and renewing innovation. The course will draw on rigorous theoretical understanding of innovation in disruptive environments and develop a toolbox of strategies and practices managers use to effectively manage innovation and organizational growth when operating under these operating contexts.

Additional Course Details:

This course will introduce modern predictive and learning analytics techniques. The main emphasis will be on the applied aspects of these techniques with programming in the R language (an open source software that has gained tremendous popularity recently). Each lecture is designed to introduce new methods followed by real data applications from various applied fields (marketing, operations, finance, economics, and sports analytics). In introducing these predictive analytics tools, the course will feature discussions on four broadly defined areas of focus: 1) finding the most appropriate model that best represents the data, 2) selecting the optimal set of predictors, 3) reducing the dimension of data and dealing with correlated predictors, 4) improving prediction performance.

Today’s businesses collect and analyze large sets of data in almost every field imaginable. Most of these companies are interested in hiring candidates who are “data” savvy. There are many questions that needs to be answered by these companies, examples include questions like

  • Which set of characteristics help us determine if a customer will purchase a product?
  • Given that a person likes movie X, what are the chances he/she will also like movie Y?
  • What is the likelihood that a stock will go up given its past performance?
  • What are the chances a sports team will win a given game?
  • How do we classify customers into groups?
  • What is probability that a customer will default on their mortgage?

A summary of topics that will be covered in the course is as follows: linear and non-linear regression analysis (ridge, Lasso, K-nearest neighbor, non-linear splines, neural networks), classification methods (logistic regression, linear discriminant analysis, support vector machines), tree based methods (regression/classification trees, bagging, boosting, random forests), unsupervised learning methods (principle components analysis, k-means clustering, hierarchical clustering).

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to 1) identify the most appropriate methodology in analyzing data for both prediction and explanatory purposes, 2) run the relevant models in R, and 3) interpret the outputs.
