Pirates have long captured the public imagination, from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel "Treasure Island" in the 1880s to Disney's ongoing "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise. This course will put pirates in their historical context. We will examine the extensive piratical activity in the Atlantic Ocean between 1680 and 1725, often considered the “Golden Age of Piracy”. Topics covered will include the economic incentives and effects of piracy, English and North American colonial efforts to end piracy, and folklore and rumors about pirates in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Students will examine primary sources, scholarly works, and art and literature about pirates and gain knowledge of several online databases. This is an online, 2-credit course.

The Leadership and Legacy of George W. Bush.

George W. Bush is one of the most controversial figures in recent political history.  In this course, we will examine his life and career from his personal and professional struggles during his early years to how he found his wife, Laura, and his faith in Christianity to his presidential election in 2000.   Next, we will analyze Bush’s decision to force a regime change in Iraq.  Third, we will examine the way he was reelected followed by the ways he led the nation during an unpopular war.  Finally, we will discuss his presidential legacy for both the executive office and the country.

HLS 799 is an alternative professional work experience required by the homeland security major and can substitute for HLS 770. The thsis is a research paper that uses either primary or secondary data collection methods with the expectation that the project be equivalent to the 300 hours interns are obligated to work. HLS 799 is graded as Cr/F just as HLS 770.
