Neuroscience of Memory

The case of Henry Molaison, more famously known as H.M., illustrates there are multiple different forms of memory.  In this class, we will explore these different memory systems from theoretical and neurobiological perspectives.  In the first half of the class, we will explore behavioral memory including sensitization, habituation, classical conditioning and instrumental/operant conditioning.  The second half of the class will focus on cognitive forms of memory including episodic, semantic and working memory.  We will also explore how episodic memories are represented and stored in the brain and end with a discussion about how these different memory systems might interact.

Fundamentals of Cognitive Science

This course will emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to the study of intelligent systems, both natural and artificial. Cognitive science synthesizes research from cognitive psychology, computer science, neuroscience, linguistics, and philosophy. The first half of the course will focus on the theoretical and historical foundations of cognitive science. Our main question would be: What is the best way to scientifically study the mind? This will require us to delve into  relevant discussions in philosophy of mind. Since cognitive science considers the mind as a biological information processing system, we will also discuss the concept of computing, and how it relates to the human brain. In the second half of the semester, we will be focusing on examples of more recent theories and developments in specific subfields of cognitive science and psychology.
