This course focuses on the repertory of Art Song (primarily solo song with piano accompaniment, although we may also explore closely related solo song accompanied by mixed chamber ensemble as a 20th-century branch of the genre) from the mid-late 18th-century to the present. In addition to the German Lied, we will explore the French mélodie, and art song from Russia, the Americas, with particular attention to women and African American contributions to the Art Song repertory. We will also consider not only composers and their songs, but also performers (singers and pianists), performance contexts, performance practice, and the ways these have changed over time, considering the place of art song performance and art song composition both in historical terms and today. The class will employ active learning principles and will include class discussion of readings and music, in-class analysis and discussions of song analysis, and student-led discussion segments and short presentations that may include performance, supported by regular informal and formal writing assignments. We will practice formulating questions and finding answers to complex questions as we investigate the Art Song repertory.
