Talking Talk: Advanced Projects in Interaction Analysis

Course objective

This course provides students with the skills and concepts to analyze naturally occurring conversation. Looking at everyday life we explore the way in which people analyze how other people talk and use this as a basis to understand society and interaction. This course focuses on analysis going beyond the introduction to LSI to examine what it is we do with our social resources in settings of our social world.

Course goals

This course presents conversation analysis as a way of examining social interaction and social life. Students will gain an understanding of the structures of interaction and how we use those structures to effect (not affect) our social scenes. You will gain a deeper appreciation of the maxim ‘we do things with words’ exploring the way in which relationships, status, power and conflict are enacted both in and as the structures of interaction. We will use a project-based approach to learning in this course in which you will be assessed on critically reflecting on your work based on my feedback and the feedback of others.
