This course aims to provide students with the scientific and manufacturing background required for the automation of tissue engineering (TE) processes. From a combination of example-filled lectures and demos, literature assessments, and group discussion, students will learn the fundamental steps of TE processes, build a repository of technologies that enable TE manufacturing, and ultimately develop their own strategy for automating and closing a real TE process identified in the literature. Topics will include cell and scaffold materials, cell expansion, bioreactors, and tissue maturation with a focus on what and how to monitor these process inputs and steps. Each student will develop the skill set necessary for navigating the translation of TE from concept to manufacturing, a skill set now in high demand by the industry. This course seeks innovative students who are motivated to evolve the industry to where it needs to be in order to make a true impact on patients.
