Our communities and infrastructure face increasingly complex, uncertain, and “wicked” challenges, like climate change and natural hazards. This includes threats like extreme heat, drought, increased precipitation intensity, sea-level rise, and more frequent and intense storms, all of which vary geographically and are made more challenging due to increased population, affluence, and urbanization. It is an essential part of our role as engineers and citizens to confront these risks now and into the long-term future. This course focuses on how we can understand and address the issues of climate change adaptation and natural hazards through resilience planning and design, vulnerability analysis, and disaster risk reduction. As a survey course, you will get an introduction to the inter-related issues of resilience and sustainable development, including theories of resilience, systems thinking, uncertainty and risk analysis, and a common vocabulary to communicate with a range of stakeholders like community members, engineers, climate scientists, and policy-makers. Examples will be drawn from a variety of infrastructure sectors and students will have opportunities to apply knowledge from class to their own specific areas of interest through course writing assignments and projects. Knowledge of sustainability is helpful but there are no prerequisites, and this course satisfies the “Sustainability” CEE area elective.

Additional Course Details:

Snow is a significant component of the hydrologic cycle in high latitude and high elevation environments.  It is also a significant part of engineering design and practice that is frequently overlooked. In this course, we will examine spatial controls on snow accumulation and the dynamics of snowmelt processes through readings of recent research in snow hydrology, field assays of snow distribution, and analytical exercises.  Of particular interest will be the importance of snow to regional water resources in diverse geographic settings and the role of snow in water resource engineering.

Class meetings will be divided between seminar-styled sessions in which we will discuss current research in the field of snow hydrology and laboratory sessions that will include field exercises at sites in the area and laboratory exercises to practice analytical methods for evaluating snowpack properties and processes.
