This course will provide a broad overview of key issues in the social scientific study of global health, drawing on perspectives from sociology, demography, and public health. Initial classes will expose students to the theory of the epidemiological transition, moving to contemporary perspectives on “the social determinants of health.” Some subsequent topics will include debates surrounding universal health coverage and social protection; population health in low-and middle-income countries; cross-national and institutional approaches to health disparities; financial crises and health; and corporate and political determinants of health. Given the current public health crisis precipitated by COVID-19, special attention will also be paid to pandemics and population health inequalities.
