Additional Course Details:
We will be looking at different genres under the umbrella term of "tonal music." We will begin with the principles of counterpoint in the 18th century and make our way through the "Classical" period, and the 20th century. A great deal of the class will focus on contemporary idioms including pop and jazz. This course is analytically driven to gain a deeper understanding of different styles of music, and assignments are designed to have students write music with guided exercises to get a better feel for the idioms. MUSI 411 OR the ability to read music suffices as a prerequisite.
