The goal of this course is two-fold: 1) to provide you with a framework for understanding basic concepts of music in the Western (i.e. Euro-American) tradition; and 2) to raise issues about the role of music in Western culture that will encourage critical thinking about the meaning, function, and nature of music.  You are not expected to be able to read music or to know music theory, but you will be required to master some basic concepts in these areas as part of the course.

I will use class time primarily to lecture and to play musical examples that illustrate concepts covered in assigned readings.  In the first half of the semester, we will use the Beatles’ recorded output as a central and consistent thread, and as a gateway to exploring other musical traditions in western culture.  I frequently will make use of musical issues that arise in Beatles songs to introduce concepts, styles, composers, performers, and genres from various Western musical traditions. In this way, we will lightly and loosely cover the European classical tradition as well.  The second half of the course will focus on several representations of the Orpheus legend from Greek mythology and other Western representations of the “power” of music.  For that part of the course you will be assigned several full length videos (operas and feature films) to view along with a selection of essays to read.

Focuses on the musical styles, traditions, and social circumstances that led to a distinctive form of American popular music in the 1950's and '60's. In addition to developing critical listening skills to discern subtle distinctions among such styles and sub-styles as blues, folk, jazz, and country, the course also considers the diverse social trends that helped drive changes and developments in the various styles and genres covered. While some attention will be devoted to rock music of the mid-late sixties, the course emphasizes the various musical styles that preceded rock.

Through selected readings, attentive listening, viewing, and discussion of a variety of films and multi-media productions, students develop a common vocabulary for analyzing music accompanying moving images. Students develop an understanding of the western and non-western musical conventions that work, often at a subconscious level, in conjunction with images to shape and cue audience responses to, and interaction with, visual cues. Media includes canonic Hollywood films, independent and foreign cinema, with explorations of non-Western films, video game scoring, television, and animation. This course does not fulfill a music major program requirement nor does it satisfy the Fine and Performing Arts Discovery requirement for any music major program.

What does film/television/game music do? How does a director work with a composer? What kinds of musics are used in film/television/game  soundtracks, and how does music interact with the visual elements to make a film scene more memorable, whether or not the viewer is fully conscious of the musical accompaniment?  Can the type of music in a scene change how the viewer responds to it? What are some of the ways that directors, film composers, and music supervisors collaborate?

An introductory course for students from all majors except for music, this class spends the first segment of the class covering basic concepts that provide the vocabulary and foundation for students to begin to describe and discuss different aspects of film music and film and the ways composers work with musical conventions —whether reinforcing older conventions or inventing new ones—to convey non-verbal, and often subconscious information to a viewing audience.  For the majority of the course we study a range of films—some classic works that are part of the American film canon and noteworthy for both film and narrative techniques and music (The Searchers , Man with the Golden Arm, Vertigo, Breakfast at Tiffany's, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Do the Right Thing) —along with some more recent films—Grand Budapest Hotel, La La Land, Get Out, Black Panther, Selma, Interstellar, Dunkirk—and a small taste of Bollywood film.

(Below is a short segment from an interview with film composer Brian Tyler in which he discusses what he does.)

Television series & film composer, Ramin Djawadi discusses his work for the Game of Thrones series.

While the majority of the course focuses on film soundtracks, concepts will be equally applicable and relevant to television and game soundtracks, and we will explore game soundtracks broadly in the last week of the semester.

Note: The attached syllabus is from Spring 2020.  This syllabus has had some significant changes that have reduced the required work / assignments section from previous years (F 2014–SP 2019). Our syllabus will be changing a bit to account for the fully remote-synchronous format.

This course explores the rich and diverse history of musicking in the United States from the colonial era to the present, with attention to the social, cultural, and economic dimensions of a variety of musics and musical practices.  Looking at the various layers of musical cultures, from Native Americans, Puritans, Spanish and French Jesuits, Moravians, Shakers, African Americans, and the various immigrant communities of the 19th century and beyond, we will cover a range of material as we think about the notion of a distinct “American” musical identity and its various manifestations.  Over the course of the semester, we will experience and explore the multiplicity of that “identity”: the idea of “American” music is, in fact, as varied and diverse as the many peoples who make up the population of the U.S.

We will cover music drawn from the “classical,” “popular,” and “traditional” spheres—terms drawn from Richard Crawford’s (our textbook author) categories of American music as we explore the interactions between music, politics, history, social life, and the creation of identity across time.  Students are responsible for all of the assigned reading and listening; assignments will include listening and reading, and sometimes, viewing of video excerpts (some of which we will watch in class).  From time to time, I will supplement the textbook with additional reading, posted as pdf files or JSTOR links on Canvas.

Required Textbook: ebook version:  Richard Crawford and Larry Hamberlin, An Introduction to America's Music, Third Edition (New York; London: W W Norton, 2018)

This course is analytically driven to gain a deeper understanding of different styles of music, and assignments are designed to have students write music with guided exercises to get a better feel for the idioms.
