Art and Architecture of Etruscan and Pre-Roman Italy

Before Rome acquired its empire it would encounter a mosaic of cultures on the Italian peninsula—Etruscans, Latins, Greeks, Phoenicians, Celts, Samnites, and others. Mutual interactions would come together to develop new material and visual cultures. This course examines the cross-cultural interaction that would shape the Roman Republic until the advent of empire under Augustus. Our aim is to understand how this blend of peoples influenced Rome as it would come to dominate the Mediterranean.

Focusing particularly on Renaissance and Baroque prints as well as black and white films of the 1920s-60s, we will examine how artists exploited monochromaticity to achieve a wide range of visual and expressive effects. Given that naturalism and, specifically, convincing coloring were often cited as measures of artistic success, how did both artists and the public adjust to popular media in which what they saw mimicked so imperfectly the real world?  What did accepting a surrogate black and white world entail for how theorists conceptualized the task of artists?  Why did filmmakers care about Rembrandt?
