Art history is by its nature interdisciplinary, and so this course, while it is intended as the capstone for art history majors, also welcomes voices (and eyes) from other disciplines. We will look at a variety of case studies addressing works of art and architecture, and students will research their own topics, in an effort to understand better the strengths and weaknesses of art historical thought, both past and present. Prereq: at least one 600-level or above art history course or equivalent experience.

Prints and Film

Focusing particularly on Renaissance and Baroque prints as well as black and white films of the 1920s-60s, we will examine how artists exploited monochromaticity to achieve a wide range of visual and expressive effects. Given that naturalism and, specifically, convincing coloring were often cited as measures of artistic success, how did both artists and the public adjust to popular media in which what they saw mimicked so imperfectly the real world?  What did accepting a surrogate black and white world entail for how theorists conceptualized the task of artists?  Why did filmmakers care about Rembrandt?
