Students will discover the world of science and nature in Iceland with a focus on the geothermal and geologic wonders of Iceland—hot springs, geysers, mud pots, fumaroles, volcanic craters and more—as well as the biology and microbiology of the subarctic. From the capital Reykjavik students travel the popular Golden Circle route and see Gullfoss and other famous waterfalls, the Geysir geothermal area, geothermal plants and elaborate greenhouses powered by Iceland’s natural energy sources. Students will also experience the black-sand beaches of Vik and other excursions in Hvolsvöllur. In this course, students will meet before the Spring Break in weekly sessions to prepare for their travel as well as to design and develop a scientific project of their own that they will carry out while in Iceland and present after their return at the Undergraduate Research Conference in April 2020.

This course will meet the Advanced Microbiology upper level course requirement for Biotech majors.
