Course Description

This course is designed to introduce students to the various aspects of project management for constructed facilities,  infrastructure, and civil and environmental projects, focusing on the CEE profession as the integrator and coordinator of other engineering, planning, architecture, legal, and other disciplines. This is not a course in construction management, but will  cover how the engineer is to interact and participate with the contractor during design and construction. The course is intended to cover both the “science” and the “art” of project management.

The sequence of classes and assignments will be structured first to focus on  teamwork and leadership, and will provide a simulation of working within a design or consulting engineering firm. The assignments will provide a progression of experience from marketing the firm, teaming with subconsultants, submitting firm qualifications, and winning the project. Then after winning the project, the focus will be on establishing the scope and schedule, estimating a design fee, negotiating and signing the contract, initiating the project, establishing project control to track project performance, risk management, and addressing contract changes to scope, schedule, or budget, and finally project close-out. For an overview perspective, the course will provide an introduction to the business of engineering, and  how managing a project fits within a corporate framework, and the importance of cash flow and financial management of a firm.

Required Textbook: “A/E Project Management Fitness Plan”, published by Zweig Group. Will be provided at a discounted price to students.
