Encounter the Romantic fantasies of John Keats's nature poetry and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the Victorian novels that brought us Jane Eyre, Ebenezer Scrooge and Mr. Hyde, the experiments of Modernists like Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, and Postmodern transformations by a shifting cast of contemporaries. We'll read these works in the context of imperial expansion and contraction, the crises of world wars, and the civil rights and independence struggles of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Additional Course Details:

This course will examine literary texts focused on transformation, anxiety about the future, and the intersection of science, technology, and society. Literary works range from those in the Romantic period (Frankenstein) to the Post-Modern period (A Number). They will be of particular interest to students who would like an introduction to British literature which features texts that engage with the promise, perils, and pitfalls of the scientific and industrial world. All are welcome. No prior knowledge is required. (See prerequisites.)
